We're Bruny Island Cheese Co. — cheesemakers, farmers and brewers from Bruny Island, Tasmania. This policy explains what personal information we collect when you shop at brunyislandcheese.com.au, why we collect it, and what we do with it. Our store runs on Shopify, so some of your information is handled by them on our behalf.

By using our website, you agree to the practices described here.

The Short Version

  • We collect what we need to sell you cheese and beer, ship it, and look after you as a customer.
  • We never see or store your full card details — payments are handled securely through Shopify.
  • We don't sell your personal information. Ever.
  • You can unsubscribe from our emails anytime, and ask us to access, correct or delete your data.
  • We sell beer, so you must be 18 or over to shop with us.

What We Collect

  • From you directly: name, email, phone, billing and shipping addresses, and your messages to us — when you order, join our Cheese Club or mailing list, or get in touch.
  • Order history: what you buy, return or exchange, and what's in your cart.
  • Payments: processed securely through Shopify. We only see confirmation and limited details (like the last digits of your card) — never your full card number.
  • Cookies: our store uses cookies to keep your cart full, remember your region, and show us how the site is used (device, browser, IP address). They're set by Shopify — full list under "Merchant storefronts" in Shopify's Cookie Policy. You can block cookies in your browser, though parts of the store may stop working.

How We Use It

  • Fulfil your orders — payments, packing, shipping across Australia, returns.
  • Run the Cheese Club and answer your questions.
  • Send you news about new batches and offers, if you've opted in. Unsubscribing is one click.
  • Improve the website and keep it secure.
  • Meet our legal obligations, including liquor licensing laws — which is why we may verify you're over 18.

Who We Share It With

  • Shopify, who powers our store (Shopify Consumer Privacy Policy).
  • Service providers — payment processing, shipping and couriers, IT support.
  • Marketing partners, to show relevant advertising. Depending on where you live, you can opt out of targeted advertising.
  • Authorities, if the law requires it.

We do not sell your personal information.

Age Restrictions

We sell beer, so our store is not for anyone under 18. Under the Tasmanian Liquor Licensing Act 1990, liquor cannot be sold or delivered to minors. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18 — if you believe a minor has given us theirs, contact us and we'll delete it.

Security and Retention

We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but no system is perfectly secure — please don't send sensitive details through insecure channels. We keep your information only as long as we need it for our services, legal obligations (tax, liquor licensing) and resolving disputes.

Your Rights

We handle personal information under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles. You can:

  • Ask what we hold about you, and request a copy
  • Ask us to correct or delete it
  • Opt out of marketing anytime (unsubscribe link in every email)

We may verify your identity first, and we'll never treat you differently for exercising these rights. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, contact us first — and you can also complain to the OAIC.

Where Your Information Is Stored

We're Tasmanian and we ship within Australia, but because our store runs on Shopify, some of your information is stored on Shopify's servers overseas, protected by Shopify's own safeguards.

We may update this policy from time to time. We'll post changes here and update the date at the top.
